Albert Camus

Camus maintains that the hero of his novel, 'La Peste', is Joseph Grand, the humble municipal clerk who spends all his leisure time in the composition of the perfect novel, but never gets beyond endlessly re-drafting the opening sentence.  In this way the pursuit of Art and the cultivation of other "honorables manies", even if they be futile or trivial, are proposed as a valid response to the absurdity of existence.

"Messieurs, chapeau bas!" to Camus for coming up with so useful a principle.
